My Story
I found myself working in mental health physio many years ago purely by happy accident and became intrigued by the additional layer of complication the mental health problem often created for the clinician. This could be in the adaptation needed with how the session was provided or in the difficulty rehabbing what should be a simple MSK problem when the person has depersonalisation.
Patients may present a simple physical problem as causing them a very high level of distress. How do you convince them that this physical problem may not be as severe as they believe especially when the person may have a distrust of health professionals? We become used to people believing what we say because we have a job title and a uniform on. But what if that makes the person less likely to believe what you are saying? What do you rely on now? Do you have other strategies? Are you able to adapt to different patients and be whom they need you to be to help them? These were the sorts of areas I became interested in.
I spent many hours interviewing experienced staff
